What a great resource Trip Advisor is! I%26#39;ve been trying to learn about Provence from reading lots of posts for the past few days - incredible!
My wife and I are planning a trip for June 2007, the first half with some good friends and the second half on our own. First half - fly to Paris, stay several days - train to Cortona, IT where our friends have a villa for 3 weeks - we%26#39;ll stay a week and take off on our own first for 2 -3 days in Venice. Here comes the question....
We%26#39;d like to travel by train to Provence without renting a car. We%26#39;d like to spend a week or so in Provence. I%26#39;m wondering if we can find a town that is a good staging area in Provence where we can rent a motorcycle or scooter and take day trips. Is this crazy? Is there a resource for such rentals? Perhaps stay in Avignon or Arles but rent a bike in Nice?
What town or towns would you choose to use as a base for day trips if you wanted to spend a week (then we%26#39;d take a TGV from Nice to Paris to return home)?

There are several locations in Provence to rent scooters or motor cycles. In Avingon, try Provence Bike which is located near the TGV station. (www.provence-bike.com) In Arle and other locations try Holiday Bikes(www.holiday-bikes.com) I%26#39;ve also rented a scooter in Carpentras. GO2Rent has multiple locations in France.
We are also renting in June
Good luck

I rented a car in Provence last year, and after seeing all the motorcycles/scooters decided that I would like to do that next trip! Does one have to have a special license?
