Carcassonne on weekends

We%26#39;re planning a trip toCarcassonne in late June and we%26#39;re trying to figure out if it makes a difference whether we are there on a weekend or weekday. Is it any less crowded on a Thursday-Friday than on the weekend or is it just packed all the time in June?

Also we plan to drive from Carcassonne to Paris and we%26#39;re looking for a fun place to stop for a night in-between. We have two kids (ages 9 and 13) who love castles and medieval stuff. Any suggestions on a nice town or castle on the way to Paris?

Hi jourprof

In summer, Carcassonne with be busy anyway, it might be busier on week ends than week days, but I doubt that there will be much in it!

On your way to Paris, I%26#39;d like to reccommend that you stop in a town calle Le Puy En Velay. It is a most spectacular looking place with small chapel stuck on a pinnacle of rock, and the really unusual Cathederal and old town on another.

Le Puy is a starting off point for the Pilgrim%26#39;s route to Santiago De La Compostella, so it has much mediaeval history that your childeren may appreciate, although no castle, the Cathederal is ancient, and architecturally %26#39;different%26#39; and is definitley worth a visit IMO.

Your other option would be to stay somewhere on the Loire, Tours, Blois, Orleans or Amboise - although famous for %26#39;Chateau%26#39; - which read %26#39;posh houses%26#39; here, Chateau is really the French word for Castle, and some of them date back to the 100 years war, you could give your kids this subject to research, and perhaps they will then suggest what they would like to see, and where they would like to stay.

Happy hunting!

Carcassonne seems to be very busy already. The boys might enjoy running round the ramparts just as much as actually going into the centre of La Cite which is rather touristy. On Saturday morning in Carcassonne there is a large lively market. A trip on a boat up the Canal du Midi is always good fun too. Have a lovely time !
