where to go south of Dijon/Beane?

My husband and I have a night or two to spend somewhere south of Dijon en route to Lyon on our trip this August. Beaune was our first pick, but it looks like the hotels there will be a bit out of our budget. I know that there are so many lovely towns in Maconnais, Beaujolais, and the Cote de Beaune, but I would like some recommendations to narrow down our choices.

Thanks in advance!

My wife and I just returned from a two week stay in the Burgundy region. We particularly wanted to stay %26quot;in the country%26quot; , but within easy driving distance of Beaune. We selected the Chateau Ige, in the town of Ige, which is approximately an hours drive from Beaune. The Chateau is just north west of Macon and is a beautiful medevial chateau. The dining room there is from the 12th or 13th century. It is a bit pricy at @ 210 Euros per night for a suite, but the location, the surrounding gardens and the atmosphere are definitely worth the price. Single rooms are a bit less. It is one of the most peaceful places that we stayed during our trip.

Hope this helps some.

See the TA review for %26quot;Auberge du Vieux Brancion.%26quot;

This is not my review of this logis-de-france accomodation, but we also stayed here last June and loved it! The best time of our week in France.

The place is OLD, so the room is worn looking and the plumbing has been updated, oh, maybe once in the last 600 years. But if that%26#39;s okay with you, it was fantastic to stay in a virtually INTACT, walled medieval village (13th-14th century?) that doesn%26#39;t allow auto traffice and only has this one small place to stay overnight. That means the mornings and evenings the place was all ours! Of the couple who run the auberge and restaurant, Francious (I know the spelling is wrong) is a real character, funny and engaging, and a wonderful cook using all regional foodstuffs and recipes. And excellent wine recommendations to accompany each meal.

We stayed 2 nights there to use as a base for exploring Taize, Cluny, and smaller villages of south Burgandy by car. Which was fine (Cluny is really interesting if you%26#39;re into political history), but we were surprised, because we would have loved more time just staying in Brancion itself, exploring the castle ruins, the wonderful Romanesque church, and soaking up the delicious view from the town%26#39;s hilltop situation.

There is also a very expensive hotel/spa lodging just outside of Brancion that would still provide a great base for exploring the region. But for us, there could be nothing better than staying in this ancient village itself.

Do note that many hotels in France, especially those budget ones, do not have air conditioning. August can be stifling hot.

I just tried out Hotel au Grand St Jean in Beaune. Do NOT go there in August. It has no air conditioning and would be absolutely miserable if it were hot outside.
