TVG experience for a day out of Paris - where?

I would like to offer my kids - teenage boys - an experience of the fast train. What is an unforgettable experience and where to? My idea is that we would leave early morning and return to sleep in Paris. Something relaxed and memorable. Any suggestions?

Try Angers.

Please elaborate :-)

My pleasure - direct TGV several times a day and takes about 2 hours. Google has lots of information on Angers - Castle is great and your sons will love walking along the battlements high above the Loire River ;-)

Correction - the castle looks over the Maine River and the Loire is on the other side of the city. The building with the Tapestry of the Apocalypse is inside the castle and the Cathedral is very close.

Wonderful! thank you... I am off to do some research on this now. In the meantime you may have another suggestion ;-)

Angers is a good suggestion. Here are some other suggestions :

- Lyon : 1 hour and 55 minutes from Paris Gare de Lyon station.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with lots of things to see and to do. You can easily walk everywhere and I am sure your teenagers will like the Roman ruins and the Renaissance district, and above all the little passages ways (called %26quot;Traboules%26quot;) in the old city or down the La Croix-Rousse hill, that are very much like a treasure hunt : ask for the map at the tourist info when you arrive.

Have a look on the website :

- Nantes is a beautiful city : 2 hours and 5 minutes from Montparnasse station. You may enjoy the Duchess Anne Castle and the Jules Verne Museum (Jules Verne was born in Nantes). And if you come after July 1st you will be able to see the Machines of Ile de Nantes that are very spectacular. Browse this website :

- And an other suggestion in the Loire Valley, that is closer to Paris : Tours is 1 hour from Paris Montparnasse station.

Or you could go to Tours, which is in the heart of the Loire Valley and the Chateaux de la Loire.

Bear in mind though, the TGV doesn%26#39;t reach its top speeds going from Paris to Tours or Angers. It%26#39;s usually the TGV Mediterrannee that really gets going, but that%26#39;s too far for a day.

Les

Les68 - tell me what TGV Mediterrannee destination you would choose if you had more than one day and tell me how many days one would need to venture south - a bientot!

%26quot;The TGV doesn%26#39;t reach its top speeds going from Paris to Tours or Angers%26quot;.

Les 68, of course it does ! Look : it takes 2 hours an a half to go to Tours (from Austerlitz station) with a %26quot;normal%26quot; Corail train, only one hour with the TGV. High speed is reached very quickly after departure. Believe me, I travel every week with the TGV from Lyon to Paris and regularly from Paris to Nantes.

WingedCreature, if you are ready to go a little farther south than Lyon, you could go to Marseille (only 3 hours, really high speed for 780 km !)., or stop at Avignon to have a feeling of Provence and visit the Palais des Papes.

Only-Lyon - please elaborate on your last suggestion. Would we do this without having to rent a car at either location? In other words, it is just a matter of stepping out of the train and visit locations through local buses or walking? Give me a sense of how we would spend the time and how many days would be reasonable to consider. Also, pricewise - we are three: an adult and two teens. A la prochaine!
