We will be spending a week in Paris this October and want to go to one of the top notch 3 star restaurants, at least once. They all sound terrific, in reading reviews, creating what I%26#39;d call a Happy Dilemma: choosing between L%26#39;Arpege, L%26#39;Ambroisie, Pre Catelan, Guy Savoy, etc etc.
Question: has anyone had any bad experiences at these gourmet palaces? If so, please share, Thanks....

I have been to almost all of them, and by the end of this week will actually have visited every one (there are three new ones this year). See www.andyhayler.com for details. I have yet to go to Pre Catalan, Astrance and Meurice (next week for these), but of the existing ones I would say that Alain Ducasse is perhaps the best, along with Arpege, with Ambroisie just behind. Ledoyen is very good, as is Guy Savoy. I would avoid Grand Vefour. You could also consider Cinq, which just lost its 3rd star but was still superb in my view, and Ambassadeurs, which many think is the best 2 star, Sadly all these are expensive. Feel free to contact me by email if you have follow up questions.

The only gourmet restaurant I have been very disappointed with was Senderens.
Le Cinq is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to and I would dine there again anytime.
L%26#39;Arpege is amazing, and I find it hard to talk about it in terms of merely a restaurant. To say it takes food to the level of a spiritual experience is an understatement. Unfortunately it is also one of the most expensive of the restaurants listed.
When we return to Paris in July we are dining at L%26#39;Espadon as I wanted somewhere with a terrace.

P.s. Andy - I love your website and to say I am envious is an understatement! Alas, being a vegetarian I would find it hard to be an accomplished food writer, but I can dream . . . . . .

I have been to most of them over the years. Pierre Gagnaire is my favorite at Hotel Balzac. Next is Vefour at Palais Royal.
Third is Taillevent. I also liked Lucas Carton before it became Senderens.

L%26#39;Ambroisie bumped our Saturday night reservation the weekend after the election despite our phone confirmation: l%26#39;ordre francais!
I was appropriately indignant but not mal elevee; they finally got us a cab and an immediate reservation at Laurent: a very shabby substitute. Vicious!
