5 nights first time

Hello,

My husband and I are arriving in Avignon first week in June. We prefer smaller villages and ability to walk to restaurant/wine cafe. After reading many posts, I am changing my mind about staying in Les Baux . But we would like to stay 2 nights somewhere and 3 nights somewhere. Leaving at tgv in Avignon the 6th day. Any help appreciated. We are in our 50%26#39;s and love people and we will have a car.

Thank you!

Will you have a car? If so, I%26#39;d stay the first two nights in Avignon Centre Ville, so you can walk to everything - no real need for the car here.. However, if you want to stay in a smaller village outside of Avignon and take some lovely day drives, there are endless choices.

I loved visiting Les Baux during the day but would not use it as a base for the area. It%26#39;s really too small and touristy. I also liked Avignon for a day trip and it would probably do as a base. However, we based ourselves in Arles for 5 nights last fall and found it to be just about perfect as a base. It was easy to get in and out and close enough to most tourist sites/areas. We could be on the highway or a local route in less than 5 minutes. St. Remy, Les Baux, Avignon, Nimes are an hour or less to get to/from. Arles is also close to the coast - Aigues Mortes, St Maries du Mer, etc. . When we return to Provence we will use Arles as a base. Large enough to have a lot to do but not overwhelming. We stayed at the D%26#39;Arlatan ( I posted a review) and loved it. There are great resaurants/cafes right outside the hotel (including Van Gogh%26#39;s) . There are several museums and sights in town. The hotel is adjacent to the river and literally right on top of the Roman baths. It you want something more like a village, Gordes is good or St Remy nmoght do also.
