Versailles time table

How long should it take for us to get to Versailles from our hotel on Rue de Rivoli, just opposite the Tuileries. We have a metro station about a block from the hotel. What do you think is a reasonable amount of time to spend there?

|||

It%26#39;s barely 10 miles from the center of Paris.

RER-C does it in about 30 minutes. You%26#39;ll need to connect to RER-C via Metro or other means from your hotel. RER-C gets you to Versailles%26#39; train station. From there, it%26#39;s a half mile walk to the chateau. Thus, give yourself a good hour.

If you show up on a weekend or a holiday to see the fountains (Grands Eaux Musicales), you%26#39;ll be in the garden at minimum from 3pm until 6pm. I like those fountains. It makes me think the Noah%26#39;s Ark flood story...tons of water gushing everywhere. The garden is gigantic. If you want to see more of the garden, add another two hours minimum. If you want to see the interior of the chateau, give yourself a good hour or two for the tour. Give yourself another two-three hours if you want a leisurely break and lunch in the little town of Versailles there, just outside the gates.

During the summer, the fountain spectacle is also available in a night version. There%26#39;s an 11am show too.

Thanks so much for the insight, with our limited time in Paris (4 days) I still think Versailles is a must see!

Yes. I think it is a must see as well.

However, keep in mind, that just last weekend, it seemed like half of the entire exterior of the chateau was covered in scaffolding. I don%26#39;t know what the schedule of that mess is but it really puts a damper on anyone%26#39;s plans for any memorable photographs.

make sure you go on the weekend for the music in the gardens ..its more impressive then the chateau!

Darth,

You are SO right about the Grands Eaux. Although I had been to Versailles several times, the first time I saw the Grands Eaux Musicales was in %26#39;05 on a Saturday in June around 10:30 a.m. (I believe they also start around 3 p.m.) What a spectacular sight! The dramatic combination of nature, music, and the fountains took my breath away.

The music literally takes you back in time.

Hmmmm......%26quot;Did I see Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI in a carriage taking a ride through the gardens?%26quot;
