Info on Etampes??

Can anyone tell me anything about Etampes? My husband and i are flying into Orly with our 18mo daughter - we arrive about 6pm, pick up our luggage and rental car and head out - i am looking for a place LESS than an our drive towards Orleans from Orly where we can arrive in time to have dinner and the town is nice enough to take a stroll in the morning before we head off to the central Loire Valley where we will be staying for 3 nights. Any input on Etampes? or possibly Dourdan? or any other town on the way to orleans?

Etampes is OK, there is not a great deal to detain you, except an excellent chinese restaurant, though. A superior option in my opinion would be Malsherbes, a small market town with a couple of OK restaurants and a hotel.

Also very nice is Milly la Foret, I am not sure about accomadations but it is a nice place to pass an hour or two, also my grandparents live there!

You can then take the N152 to Orleans, this passes through pleasant countryside and woodland, you should be in Orleans in about an hour or so

I believe Milly la Foret is a bit more interesting the Etampes if not a bit farther out of the way.

I%26#39;ll never forget some years ago driving through the older part of Etampes, following an automobile marked %26quot;Auto Ecole%26quot;. The driver cautiously signaled to turn left at a narrow intersection, looked all directions then began his turn. All this new activity must have been a bit confusing to this novice driver because rather than slowing into the turn, he accelerated; those pedals can be a bit confusing. He smashed rather decisively into the rear of a parked car. There was an unwitting fellow who had just parked his car there to make a phone call in the telephone cabin found on that very corner. I%26#39;ll never forget the look on his face, the pay phone hanging over his shoulder as he turned to see what had happened to his parked car. The damage was pretty incredible. I am not sure who who assumed the responsibility for the accident, the student driver or his instructor in the right seat.

Anyway, I digress. Orleans itself is only 1 1/2 hours from Orly and you%26#39;ll spend that much time driving the D routes looking for Etampes and it%26#39;s really easy to get lost looking for Milly la Foret. Why not just arrange for a Chambre d%26#39;hote in Orleans? You%26#39;ll be on the right road to continue on to the Loire Valley the next morning.

No matter what city you choose, be careful at the intersections.
