4th north of Rue Rivoli - is it safe?

I am travelling with two kids in July and would like some thoughts about safety in this area and in terms of access to markets and the like. Merci!

Hello fellow Canadain. Paris is very safe. I have done it alone, and I have taken my teenage son( 14yr old) , I am also returning alone this summer.

I would not like to spend a week alone in Vancouver, and I have been there many times, but I am happy alone in Paris, I find Paris is much safer ( at least it FEELS safer!)

I have stayed on Rue Du Rivoli, ( Hotel Brighton) but I really have no idea what %26quot;number %26quot; it is,, but the whole length of the street seems very safe to me.

Are you staying in a hotel or apartment?

Well I just seached on this site( typed in %26quot;map of paris%26quot; which took me to the %26quot; insiders pages%26quot; which then sent me to a post that had a link to %26quot;Mappy%26quot;.

Looks like a great area,, I mean obviously can%26#39;t tell much from a map, and I know posters here who will have much better information for you, ,, but I think it is a good locale, close to Notre Dame and the Seine,, and just walk over the bridge for cheap eats in the Latin Quarter. Have fun.

The area you%26#39;re considering, the 4eme arrondissement--Îles / lower-Marias will be just fine for your purpose and be relatively convenient and interesting....and as safe or safer than any other neighborhood in central Paris.

As for access to markets (One assume you mean daily street markets) I don%26#39;t recall all that much in the immediate neighborhood of the 4eme....though I think that there%26#39;s one a couple of days per week near Hôtel de Ville. But there are several markets in nearby neighborhoods--Place Monge and Maubert street markets just across the Seine in the upper-5eme-Latin Quarter and the market / pedestrian area around rue Montorgueil in the 2eme arrondissement.

For the novelty of it there is a daily flower market on and around Place Louis Lepine on Île de la Cité (Mon-thry-Sat) and on Sundays, the area turns into a bird and pets market.

The Marché Baudoyer in front of the Mairie du 4eme on Place Baudoyer is our neighborhood market. It%26#39;s open on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Métro : Hôtel de Ville.

The Sunday market near Bastille, Marché Bastille - Blvd. Richard Lenoir Thursday and Sunday mornings is huge and fun. We do half our weekly shopping there every Sunday.

Métro : Bastille

|||

Merci beaucoup! Marche Bastille - would you tell me the exact name so that I can locate it in the map? Corner Street? I will surely take a walk there.

|||

The Marché Bastille is on Blvd. Richard Lenoir just north of the Place de Bastille above the canal St. Denis. Take the Metro or walk to Place de Bastille and look north. The navigational goal should be Blvd. Richard Lenoir at Place de la Bastille.

|||

%26lt;%26lt;canal St. Denis%26gt;%26gt;

How embarrassing. I meant the canal St. Martin.

thank you metromole... and thank you for the correction - I would have never noticed... :-)

Hello winged,

IMO not only is the area north of rue Rivoli safe enough, it is a great area, with some of the oldest buildings in Paris, colorful narrow streets, some wonderful ethnic food, a zillion restaurants, museums, lovely parks (expecially historical Place des voeges) and just about anything you might want. An extra is that the shops north of rue Rivoli are opened on Sundays (a rare treat for Paris). If you stay closer to hotel d%26#39;Ville it is more commercial but almost any area to the east of there is great. It is an area many people seek out to explore and stay in for their trips to Paris.

Not only are there street markets as mentioned, but rue Rivoli (which changes its name to rue Fabroug-Antoine before the Bastille) has many small markets........super markets, many open veggie and fruit markets, bakeries .....mostly anything you could possibly want.

It is easy to get to any other area of the city from there too. Many buses and some convenient metro lines (The St Paul metro is right on the rue and even has an esclator for exiting). You can easily walk to Notre Dame, Ile de cite, the Latin quartier and many other attractions.

If you come from a small town you might have to get adjusted to the hustle bustle of the city, but once you do, you will surely find this a terrific area in which to stay..

Have fun..........
