Swimming Trunks or Briefs??

We are coming to France at the end of June and for part of our stay we are on a Eurocamp site.

I%26#39;ve just got the info pack through from Eurocamp and it says in French Pools men have to wear swimming briefs, like speedos, not the shorts style.

My man and sons all have the shorts style swimmers, do I really need to buy new trunks for them all??

Sorry for the obscure question!

Shorts are forbidden in all public pools in France since there have been children who died of asphyxia at the bottom of pools when their shorts got sucked up in the draining device . It seems from what you write that swimming pools at camp sites are considered as public pools too . I%26#39;m afraid that you will have to buy new trunks ...

This always seems so strange the first time you come across this regulation but it is true. In French public swimming pools for health reasons they require speedo-like swim-wear not baggy shorts. Now you may or may not get away with it but do you really want to risk it?

What about those very short shorts a la Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, favoured by David Beckam too? They are fitted around the leg, not baggie or long. I think they are far nicer than %26#39;budgie smugglers%26#39;. You could always wait and see then if necessary buy some cheap ones from the local supermarkets when you are here.

I was convinced this was a joke - so did some Googling.

It seems that Les Anglo-Saxons wander about all day in baggy swim shorts and then jump into the pool. Quelle unhygienique!

I%26#39;m looking forward to taking a photo of my first Defense de Shorts sign

The sign is usually a picture of a pair of shorts with a cross through them - surprise, surprise.

I first came across the ban about 12 years ago so it does not seem odd to me.

We were at Aqualand in St Maxime last year and swimming shorts were fine there - so it must depend on the individual policy.
