Apologies in advance if this topic has been done to death - I did search but can%26#39;t seem to find the answers to my questions..
Tomorrow I will make my way on the Metro from St Germain to Gare du Nord to catch the Thalys train to Amsterdam..
Is the transfer of platforms/areas from the Metro to the Thalys platform a difficult one/ long walk / loads of stairs etc?
I made it from CDG to St germain with my 20kg bag ok - including changing lines twice..LOL..but want to know what to expect..
My sister said when she was in Paris there were many sketchy types loitering around Gare du Nord - has it changed in recent years?
Also - I booked and paid for my ticket on the internet - is it clearly marked out wehre I need to pick up my ticket at Gare du Nord?
Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Hey, can anyone help our on-location-reporter ?
Ausboxer - Bon Voyage to Amsterdam. It is a totally different city, you will love it. Very beautiful, the Venice of Northern Europe.
As to the sketchy types - you have been in Paris for a week now. So how many sketchy types have you met ? Don%26#39;t listen to sis, nobody will jump at you and your megasized stoneheavy suitcase....

Thanks Gitte - I am sure I will enjoy Amsterdam - I am looking forward to it. After that I go back to the English countryside for a few days then on to London for a week - yet another new experience!
Oh - and did you catch my Moulin Rouge report?
And on the sketchy types - the only remotely sketchy types I have seen were a few guys at the Metro stop I changed lines at on the way to Moulin Rouge last night..although they were probably not sketchy at all and I was being overly cautious!!
Good luck to anyone who attempts to grab my bag, LOL.. It does weigh a bit!

From the metro you will have to go up to the train station.
There are escalators and stairs. Make sure you hold on to your metro ticket.
Also allow some extra time to recover your train ticket from the %26quot;vending%26quot; machines and to find your train and car and seat etc. Those trains are very long and often attached to an other train going to Brussels or Germany. So you may have to roll your suitcase for a few minutes. Grab a spot in the luggage storage area when you get on board as it is difficult to keep your luggage with you if it is bigger than carry-on size.
Gare du Nord is definitely a melting pot and you will encounter people from all walks of life there... along with more police than you have seen anywhere else. Just walk and do not think!

la photographie - thank you for your response, it is much appreciated.
I am planning on leaving my apartment here in St Germain around 11am, and my train departs Gare du Nord at 12.55 - I think that gives me plenty of time to get my ticket etc..

Apologies - I spelt your handle incorrectly..la photographe, I meant!

Bonjour, Ausboxer -
Small point perhaps, but I don%26#39;t think Australian credit cards work in the automatic ticket dispensers in French stations. You will have to go to the ticket window to claim your tickets. You should have plenty of time. Don%26#39;t forget to validate (composter) your ticket in one of the machines close to the entry to the platforms — doesn%26#39;t matter which one.
Bon voyage!

Ausboxer, yes I read you MR report. I am looking very much forward to what that %26quot;cheese male perfomance%26quot; meant ?? Are you really saying that you get The Full Monty !!???
That would make my two old ladies polish their spectacle glasses !!!
|||
cheese = cheesy
(and I still don%26#39;t know what it means, except that it is in the naughty department).
|||
Gitte - LOL - No, luckily no %26quot;full monty%26quot;...
I meant that the male performers came across to me as really hamming it up on stage, whereas the women were for the most part elegant and graceful..

I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;s necessary; at least, I%26#39;ve never done it when taking the Thalys to Amsterdam. Your ticket will be checked when you board the train by one of the conductors.
