Best resource for French road signs

We are driving from Nice to Provence and then on to Geneva and are keen to familiarise ourselves with road signs BEFORE we hit the autoroute. Have had a look on the net and there are a few places that you can pay to download such things. As we are travelling light (carry-on only), weight is an issue, so I don%26#39;t want to buy a book with anything other than the road signs and perhaps the maps of the areas we are visiting (the run to Geneva will just be by the fastest route - no time for sightseeing malheureusement, so just basic map required). We have a thirty hour trip ahead of us to reach Paris which could be put to good use studying road signs so I%26#39;m inclined to buy it here. Thank you very much for this and all the other insightful advice I have picked up on TA - three weeks to go!!!

France uses the same international road signs found elsewhere (with the possible addition of the yellow, tilted square). If you are using the autoroute, there is really nothing extra to know. Special instructions when applicable are written in Italian, German, and English. There are no tricks, nothing to study to safely travel on the autoroutes.

If you are considering driving in Paris (something I do not recommend), there are not a great number of signs and nothing which I am sure you have not already seen.

I do think it is a mistake not to have a good map while traveling these roads. Good reference materials can help clarify many confusing situations.

I%26#39;ve used a Garmin Nuvi navigator assistant in Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. It works great for navigating dense city streets. It can fit in your pocket. It has a suction cup device to mount to any car%26#39;s windshield for easy viewing by the driver. It is fantastic. It should be available for Australia too if you want to %26quot;test drive%26quot; it.

Besides that, if you%26#39;d like to preview road signs, I%26#39;ve seen a diagram of them in the Rick Steves phrase book series, usually in the Travelling Section, Finding Your Way Sub-section.

Thanks for that. In fact, we will be mainly on back roads- staying in Vence for two weeks and combining with family to explore the area and %26#39;live%26#39; their life. We will also be based in L%26#39;Isle-sur-la-Sogue for four days and will drive on back roads in that area also. It will only be the trip to Geneva that we will be on the autoroute.

Whoops, also meant to say that I will definitely use as detailed ( and light) a map as possible for the areas we will be in - I just meant that I didn%26#39;t want to lug a book full of maps for all of France.

Don%26#39;t worry, driving in France is straightforward enough.

www.viamichelin.com will help you plan your journey, giving you routes, distances, journey times %26amp; toll costs.
