Travel During Sarkozy Inauguration

Hi, I will be in town for just a couple days, but it will be right during Sarkozy%26#39;s inauguration on 5/17. Would you expect this to disrupt my plans? Is there a certain place where all the stuff happens?

Thanks,

Matt

Well , i think that nobody really knows today what will be the power tranfer ceremony between the 2 presidents , but don%26#39;t worry , it won%26#39;t block Paris and it souldn%26#39;t have any impact on the touristic places

enjoy your stay :)

I think that if you are so nervous you should not go.

WHO knows what is going to happen? Probably nothing as there will be police everywhere.

You may have to stay away from some areas in worse case scenario.

A good lesson for me was: I recently visited Yemen, a %26quot;DANGEROUS%26quot; country. It was all safe and wonderful when at the same time kids were being killed on an American campus. Live your life and do not overanalize it IMHO.

I believe the inauguratioon is May 16th, not the 17th. We%26#39;ll be in Paris that week (14th-21st). I think it could be really interesting and historic. How often do we, as travellers, get to be some place when a new leader is taking office?

If this were Washington, DC, I%26#39;m sure there would be official postings about which streets or areas were closed to traffic, or closed to pedestrians, etc., but I have looked and can%26#39;t find anything for Paris realted to the inauguration day. Possibly someone else will chime in with information.

We%26#39;re staying near the Sorbonne and other universities where there have been protests and demonstarions about the new president, but I%26#39;m not at all concerned.

If you have concerns about travel disruptions, you might want to plan for visiting areas during th einauguration time that are not close to the %26quot;center%26quot; where there are government buildings, e.g. might be a good time to go to Monmartre.

Just as a %26quot;heads up,%26quot; May 17th is a holiday (Ascenson), and that might impact some places.

We were in Paris for the inauguration (without realizing it).

They closed off the Champ Elysses for a %26quot;parade%26quot; down the avenue. At the time, we were walking along the Seine heading from Notre Dame towards the Louvre (heading in the direction of the event but far enough away not to know what was going on), and were suprised by the dozens, yes dozens, of blue police buses sounding alarms and passing by in full gear - complete with gas masks!

In hindsight, they were heading away from the inaugration and probably moving on towards Sarkozy%26#39;s next appearance location. It was a little scary not knowing why all the police were going over the bridges but all turned out well.
