2 full days in Corsica

My Mom, 11yr. old son and myself will be in Corsica the second week of July. We are staying outside of Corte and would like to know what would be the best things to see. We are more of the %26quot;off the beaten path%26quot; tourist and would like to soak up the %26quot;real%26quot; Corsica. We love to day hike, eat and try new foods and history is our passion. Any ideas would be great in how to see as much as we can in as little of time.

2 days only?? Hardly worth the expense of getting there! You%26#39;ll have problems soaking up the real Corsica in just 2 days.

You might try the train to Ajaccio - Napoleon Bonaparte is everywhere - it%26#39;s his birthplace. Otherwise not a lot of history, but fantastic scenery on the train journey and a pleasant enough town for half a day.

Plenty of opportunity for day hikes in the Corte area, particularly in the Restonica valley and Gorges du Tavignano. And ample eating places in Corte itself. The ville haute in Corte has lots of history and is worth a few hours.

I%26#39;d spend one day in Corte (citadelle, museum, town, lunch, shops) and one on a hike.

Personally I%26#39;d go for the Tavignano hike but that%26#39;s because I%26#39;ve never done it (hoping to get there this summer).

If you look here http://art.simon.tripod.com/MareAMareNord/

at the entry for Wednesday 18th you%26#39;ll see a brief description and pictures to give you some idea - you just walk out of Corte centre as far as the suspension bridge, and back, for a day hike, so you don%26#39;t need a car or anything.

Although depending on where you%26#39;re staying %26#39;outside of Corte%26#39; maybe you could walk somewhere straight from there.

If you only have two days, I would not devote a whole day to looking round Corte. While it is an interesting town, you can see in in the evenings before or after having a meal in one of the restaurants.

I would bring your son walking just a few kilometres out of Corte into the Vallee de la Restonica. After only about 2 km you are in a wonderful world of rocks, hills and the most amazing rock pools for swimming, climbing, even diving. It will be heaven for him, Your mum will love it too. Sitting in some of those small pools is like being in your own jacuzzi. And, believe me, in the heat of July, it will be out-of-this-world delicious. Bring your own picnic. If you have a car or really love walking, you can go further up the valley where it gets even better, but really you don%26#39;t have to go far. Also I believe that in July a shuttle bus operates up the valley, but have no experience of this.

There are also a couple of very good restaurants at the start of the road leading into the Restonica valley.

I also recommend the train journey to Ajaccio and back, but perhaps this will eat into your time too much, as the timetable is not great, and once in Ajaccio there is not a awful lot to do compared with what you could be doing around Corte.
