Some advice, please. We arrive in Carnon, near Montpelier (return to Carnon) for a 10 day holiday on a boat. Suggestions and advice as to our direction of travel would be appreciated. Should we sail East towards Arles and the Camargue or West to Bezier and the Canal du Midi. Thanks

I am not sure how far east you can travel without a French Permit Fluvial which is required to enter into the Rhone. There is really not a great deal to visit east of Aigues Mortes and Le Grau du Roi. You could stop there and proceed back west bound along the Canal du Rhone a Sete (or do it at the end of the 10 days). Beaucaire and St. Giles are really not as interesting as Trebes and Carcassonne (if you can make it that far west).
Certainly you%26#39;ll want to spend most of your time in the Canal du Midi. How far you will be able to go will depend upon a number of factors: travel time per day, crowds at the locks (particularly the 6 locks of Fonseranne near Beziers) and weather across the Etang de Thau (cross in the morning, afternoon winds can make the travel unpleasant in a flat bottom boat).
One word of caution, avoid the Canal de la Robine which branches south of le Canal du Midi and proceeds through Narbonne. There are few facilities and even fewer points of interest.

Thank you, that%26#39;s very helpful. West it is.
