My husband and I will be in Paris next week and would like to visit Versailles. We have about 4-5 hrs in the morning one of the days. I surveyed the web for Versailles tour from Paris but the rates seem exhorbitant.
Would appreciate advice on :
going about travelling to Versailles on your own (best mode of transport);
what not to miss while in Versailles and
What we can cover in 4 hrs (8am-12Pm) including travel time.
Thanks!

It%26#39;s easy to reach on the RER. There will be signs after you get off the train, and it%26#39;s an easy walk. You should be able to find a web site specifically for Versailles that will tell you what options currently are offered for self-tours (typically, there will be certain areas offered with the basic entry, and then a surcharge for other areas -- I haven%26#39;t been there in a few years so can%26#39;t be more specific).
I can tell you, however, that four hours including travel just isn%26#39;t enough to really feel like you%26#39;ve seen it. If you%26#39;re going to go to the trouble of finding and taking the train, you should allow the better part of the day for the trip.

It takes about 50 minutes to go to Versailles castle from the heart of paris:
40 minutes of train from Saint Michel station to Versailles rive gauche station (RER line C) and 10 minutes walking from the train station to the castle.

%26quot; If it%26#39;s Tuesday this must be Belguim%26quot;.
Four hours( apparently quite precisiely four hours) is too short. You could do it, but, why bother it wounds too stressful. What if you accidently didn%26#39;t leave the grounds till 1 o%26#39;clock in the afternoon, whould that really affect your afternoon schedule that much???
The gardens and buildings on the grounds can easily take two or three hours, ,, then the main palace apartments could take another 1 1/2 or 2 hours. I know you could just march straight through the main apartments and be done in two hours,, skip the gardens, the Petit Trianon, the Hamlet ,, etc.. but, as I said, it hardly would seem worth the trip if one had to skip so much to %26quot;see Versailles%26quot;
Is there anyway you could rethink your scheduling?

I%26#39;d agree. You%26#39;re giving yourself about 2.5 hours to see Versailles. If you can%26#39;t give it more time than that, you should really consider not going. It would be a stressful waste of time.

Here is the offical website for Versaille. It will give you the information a map and directions on how to tour the historic Chateau.
http://www.chateauversailles.fr/en/
Get the earliest train( make sure you are going in the right direction!) and buy your ticket ahead of time. A guided tour of the apartments lasts 90 minutes. You must get there early to avoid a long wait line.
What day are you planning to go? That also makes a difference in the crowds.

Go for it....we took a not so early train from the Eiffel Tower...said yes to the tour company right outside the station that offered an immediate tour(no waiting in the long outside line) w/ an English speaking guide. We spent a over an hour inside and then walked the grounds for another hour or so..spent $$ in the gift shop...had lunch nearby on the walk back to the station.
We then decided to hit the catacombs and catch a nap before dinner at Le Grand Vefour. This was one of our best stress free days!

Thanks to all of you for the tips. We decided to reschedule a bit and ended up planning over half a day at Versailles. We didnt want to skip seeing places for lack of time.
