Nice restaurants - Delhi Belhi

Delhi Belhi - 22 rue de la Barillerie, Vieux Nice.

Tel: 04 93 92 51 87

Delhi Belhi is an Indian restaurant. It%26#39;s in the South of France, but it%26#39;s an Indian. Bear with me though, it%26#39;s worth it. And don%26#39;t be put off by the name - clearly the owners have a twisted sense of humour.

Indian food as we know it in the UK isn%26#39;t Indian food - it%26#39;s a British interpretation of Indian food from the days of the Raj. Delhi Belhi offers a further hybrid, being a French take on a British take on Indian food. But the menu is a lot less confusing that the definition - everything is there: lime pickle (which is a generous portion, none of these thimble-sized servings); thali (a curious variation with a variety of different dips to try); aloo saag (quite simply the best I or my partner had tasted in our entire lives); vindaloo - the list goes on. The wine menu isn%26#39;t bad (the Sancerre is good) and the ice-cream is gorgeous.

All this is set into a backdrop that resembles a higgledy-piggledy Indian street: random photographs and advertising material, low lighting, incense and I%26#39;m sure I saw a bicycle wheel at some point.

It%26#39;s well priced, and after a week or so of the same old menus in Nice (let%26#39;s face it, variety isn%26#39;t exactly the objective in a lot of restaurants - carpaggio of beef, anyone?) a very welcome change. So if you want a casual meal where the atmosphere and food get 10 out of 10, then give it a try. We even gave it the acid test and went back, and sure enough, it was excellent again.

I agree that Delhi Belhi is one of the best Indian restaurant%26#39;s in Europe (there may be better Indian restaurants in the UK - but I have tried a lot of Indian eateries on the continent, and this is one of the best so far). Looks like they now have a website at

%26lt;a href=%26quot;http://www.delhibelhi.com%26quot;%26gt;www.delhibelhi.com%26lt;/a%26gt; as well...

Clarification - the website can be reached at www.delhibelhi.com

I originally poo poo%26#39;d the Delhi Belhi out of ignorance and the fact I have rarerly if ever found good indian food on the Cotes d%26#39;Azur. (Good Chinese however is even rarer still!) In England we are overwhelmed with competition and spoilt for choice.

I stumbled on the Delhi Belhi last trip - a tiny back street running behind the Cours Saleya, parallel to it - never noticed it before - its really out of sight. However closer attention to the menu, the prices, and the various annual food guide awards quoted outside has convinced me - this is a must try. It looks great

For my first few visits to Nice i was actually put off by the name, but a friend that lives in Nice suggested i try it and i must say it was better than any Indian i had experienced in UK. I always visit at least once on a trip now. Don%26#39;t be put off by the surroundings is my advice.

We%26#39;ll be going into Nice several times this trip (Cannes based) and I had earmarked %26quot;Zen Restaurant%26quot; for a curry . Maybe I should reconsider and go to Delhi Belhi instead? Any regs or experts care to comment on the differences?

Nothing in depth you understand, lol, ~ we just like a good curry, but would prefer to go to the better restaurant. Thanks ...

Ive been past many times - rue d%26#39;Angleterre - but sorry not in. An interesting source of opinion on Nice restaurants I found here -

eng.cityvox.fr/restaurants_nice/LieuxTrouves…

Maybe you know it - if not, its worthy of a browse.

Cheers

That%26#39;s quite a site ~ NiceLife! Thank you! Also found a Scandinavian and a couple of Irani restos! (Alas, and surprisingly, not much Moroccan). I think we%26#39;ll try the Delhi Belhi; the name just cracks me up!
